As a total Mac n00b, I was unaware of this handy little trick. Holding the keyboard combination while you scroll around the page or within the dictionary pop-up is a little cumbersome, though, so. The built-in Dictionary app in macOS is hardly the sexiest piece of software out there, but it is a crucially overlooked resource. When combined with the context menu’s “Look Up” function, it makes both learning words and using words correctly far easier.

General epithet for an unstable piece of shit. Mac OS X (n.)- The best operating system. OS X is the future of operating systems, it's clean, elegant, easy to use, and most importantly - useful. Mac OS X (Mac OS 10) The current operating system from Apple for the Mac family. Starting in the fall of 2016, Version 10.12 uses the rebranded 'macOS' moniker and not OS X. See macOS and Sierra. Apple’s system-wide dictionary on OS X is one of the more covert productivity tools available to Mac users. It’s more than just the Dictionary app, for instance you can add words to your personal dictionary to prevent spellcheck on things like Simplenote or foreign names like Penderworth.
This page provides instructions for downloading the WORDS Latin-to-Englishdictionary program for Mac OS X.
WORDS is a text/console program and has previously not been available for the Mac. The UNIX-based Mac OS X allows an easy port of the Ada code.
A graphical interface is now included in the WORDS for Mac OS X package.
Downloading
A .sit file containing the installer is located at words-1.97.sit [It should work with versions of OS X up to 10.7, though it might be necessary to install Rosetta, which comes with these versions of OS X but is not always installed by default. FOR versions 10.7 and later, try Erik Mendoza's Interpres.]
Installation/Execution
The installer package will place WORDS in your Applications folder.
Output
For each word entered, the program identifies all the possible interpretationsof the word, then, for each interpretation, makes an analysis of the word (part of speech, declension, conjugation, case, tense, voice, etc.) andgives the usual meaning of the root form. As an example, given the word'amas,' Words produces the following output:
This shows that 'amas' can be interpreted in two different ways:
1. as a noun (ama=bucket; first declension; feminine accusative plural; stem 'am', ending 'as'; principal parts ama, amae),
or
2. as a verb (amare=to love; first conjugation; second-person singular present active indicative; stem 'am', ending 'as'; principal parts amo, amare, amavi, amatus).

li·on
(lī′ən)n.1. A large carnivorous feline mammal (Panthera leo) of Africa and northwest India, having a short tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders.
3. b. A person regarded as fierce or savage.
4. Lion See Leo.
Idiom: lion's share
[Middle English, from Old French, from Latin leō, leōn-, from Greek leōn, of Semitic origin; see lbʔ in Semitic roots.]
Word History: Old French lion is the source of English lion, and the Old French word comes from Latin leō, leōnis. The Latin word is related somehow to Greek leōn, leontos (earlier *lewōn, *lewontos), which appears in the name of the Spartan king Leonidas, 'Lion's son,' who perished at Thermopylae. The Greek word is somehow related to Coptic labai, laboi, 'lioness.' In turn, Coptic labai is borrowed from a Semitic source related to Hebrew lābī' and Akkadian labbu. There is also a native ancient Egyptian word, rw (where r can stand for either r or l and vowels were not indicated), which is surely related as well. Since lions were native to Africa, Asia, and Europe in ancient times (Aristotle tells us there were lions in Macedon in his day), we have no way of ascertaining who borrowed which word from whom.
